MA-600 and Handset Manager
Troubleshooting Guide
Handset Manager Software Installation Troubleshooting
Q&A
Q: Why is it when I launch Handset Manager, the
connection with my mobile phone can not be established and the status bar
displays "Try to connect to the handset…"?
A : This problem may be caused by a lot of
reasons. Use the following guide lines to figure out what's wrong:
(1) The first things you need to know about Infrared and
Handset Manager :
-
You must use correct
Handset Manager version. Use 61xx Handset Manager for 8210 phone would not
work.
-
You must know if
your mobile phone needs MA-600 Infrared Device Driver pre-installed. For
NOKIA 61xx series, 8210 and 8850 phones, there is
no need to install MA-600 Infrared Device Driver. For other mobile phones
like NOKIA 7110, SIEMENS S25,S35i and MOTOROLA L series,
ERICSSON R320, MA-600 Infrared Driver must be installed before
you use Handset Manager. Please refer to the Ma-600 Infrared Device
Driver Installation Guide on the CD or on the Services-->Device
Drivers page of Mobile Action's web site. For the problems during
the device driver installation process, please refer to this section.
-
You must know the
position of the Infrared Port on your mobile phone and how to enable it
before aim it to the MA-600. The NOKIA 61xx, 7110 and MOTOROLA L series
infrared port's location are on the top. The infrared port of NOKIA 8210 and
8850 are on the left side-wall, while the S25 infrared port is on right
side-wall. The ERICSSON R320's infrared port is the black stripe on
upper-right side. To enable the infrared port of the phone, please refer to
the Handset Manager User's Guide.
-
MA-600 would be
interfered by electromagnetic field generating device such as monitor.
Another cause may be the mobile phone is not within the effective range of
MA-600. Move MA-600 for at least 50 cm away from the monitor and place the
mobile phone at about 5 cm distance to MA-600.
(2) For NOKIA
61xx series, 8210 and 8850 phones, the following check list
would be helpful:
-
Review The first things you need
to know about Infrared and Handset Manager section.
-
There is no need to
install the MA-600 Infrared Device Driver for those phones. However, if the
Infrared Driver do exist, you may use Remove the Infrared Device
Driver document on the CD or on the Services-->Device
Drivers page to remove the driver completely, or you may use the
following procedures to disable it--
Under
Windows 95, DO NOT activate the Infrared Monitor on the
Control Panel after reboot.
Under
Windows 98, please go to the Control Panel, double click the
System and go to the Device Manager page. Click Network
Adapters and select the Mobile Action MA-600 then click
Properties. On the Mobile Action MA-600 Properties page,
select the Disable in this hardware profile then click OK. You
can see a red cross placed on Mobile Action MA-600 under Windows 98.
You need to reboot the system.
Under Windows
2000, please go to Control Panel, click
System. Select the Device Manager under
Hardware page. Click Infrared devices and
select Mobile Action MA-600 Serial Infrared Device. Click
Disable icon then click OK.
You can see a red cross placed on the Mobile Action MA-600 Serial Infrared Device.
-
Check the system BIOS
of your mainboard. The hardware resource of the COM port should be set as:
COM1 -- 3F8-3FF, IRQ4; COM2 -- 2F8-2FF, IRQ3. The COM port
must be Enabled. If MA-600 is connected to COM2, COM2 should be set
as standard UART port. You should not enable the Infrared feature of
COM2.
-
Check the installed
drivers under Device Manager to see if there exists other device
driver using the same hardware port as MA-600. Click the Properties
and look into the hardware resources to see if there is any conflict. Some
previously installed modem or mouse drivers would interfere with the
communication if they are configured to use the same hardware port as
MA-600. Remove the conflicting driver completely.
-
For
NOKIA 8210 and 8850, You must use another way to activate the infrared
function of the phone. DO NOT use the Menu 9 (Infrared)
function. Please use Menu 6-2-3 (Games -->Snake
-->2 Players then press Select) to activate the Infrared
function. For NOKIA 61xx series, activate the infrared function by
Menu 9 instead. After the infrared function is enabled, there would
be an infrared link symbol appear and blink on the handset screen. If the PC
does not successfully connect to the handset for about 40 seconds, the
blinking symbol will disappear and you must re-activate the infrared
function of handset again.
-
Check if you
configure the Handset Manager COM port setting correctly. Go to the
"Options" menu of the Handset Manager then select "Interface
Setup" to make sure the settings are correctly configured. Select COM1
or COM2 at most cases. Observe the Green LED on top of the MA-600. If the
COM port is correctly configured, the LED will be turn off for a short
period on every 8 seconds. If the LED does not show correctly after you have
tried COM1 and COM2, you need to check the hardware resource of the COM Port
to see if they use the correct value. On the Device Manager page,
click the Ports, then select COM1 or COM2 (which MA-600 is
connecting), press Properties. Select the Resources page and
see if the COM setting is as: COM1 -- 3F8-3FF, IRQ4; COM2 --
2F8-2FF, IRQ3. If the value is not correct, you need to enter the system
BIOS to modify it.
(3) For NOKIA
7110, MOTOROLA L series, SIEMENS S25, S35i, ERICSSON R320 phones, the
following check list would be helpful:
-
Review The first things you need
to know about Infrared and Handset Manager section.
-
Check the system BIOS
of your mainboard.
-
You must check if
the Infrared Device Driver is installed and enabled properly before you
run the Handset Manager. Please close the Handset Manager and test if
the PC Infrared Monitor can discover your phone. If the phone can not
be discovered, it means the device driver installation is not successful.
Please refer to this section.
-
Limit the infrared
connection speed to be 38.4K. Refer to the Handset Manager User's Guide on
how to do that.
-
If the PC can
discover the phone and Handset Manager is still not workable, perhaps you
did not configure the Handset Manager's COM port setting correctly. Go to
the "Options" menu then select "Interface Setup". Normally it
is COM4, but COM5 or COM6 is also possible. Make sure the
Communication Port is corresponding to the COMx
recorded on the Infrared Monitor for application usage. The new version (2.2.0 or above) Handset Manager would
automatically detect the COMx setting and the adjustment is no more
necessary.
Q : When I run Handset Manager under Windows 95,
why does the error message "A required .DLL file, OLEPRO32.dll, was not find."
or other file missing error message appear?
A : Handset Manager utilizes newer version of
"Windows Common Control" components. If your system is Windows 98 or Windows
95 but has IE3.0 or newer version installed, the components are already in the
system. For very original Windows 95 without IE3.0 or above version installed,
please install the Microsoft Internet Explorer before you use the
software.
Q: Is there a Handset Manager version that can
work for all mobile phones ?
A : No. Because the data communication protocol
is different on each mobile phone, we use different Handset Manager for
different mobile phones. With very similar user interface, however, the
Handset Manager is different in the data communication layer for various
phones.
Q: Why is it some Handset Manager need to install
the MA-600 Infrared Device Driver, while some Handset Manager need to disable it
?
A : For NOKIA 61xx series, 8210
and 8850 phones, the Handset Manager use proprietary protocol to
communicate to the phone. The protocol are built-into the Handset Manager, so
there is no Infrared Device Driver needed. Because the Infrared Device Driver
use the same physical COM port as the Handset Manager for NOKIA 61xx, 8210 and
8850, the Infrared Device Driver must be disabled first to avoid port
conflict. For others mobile phones like NOKIA 7110, SIEMENS S25
and MOTOROLA L series, ERICSSON R320 the communication protocol
follow the IrDA standards, the Handset Manager use Infrared Virtual COM port
to communicate to the phone. The MA-600 Infrared Driver must be installed and
enabled in this case.
