DescriptionDescription:

The third film in acclaimed Hong Kong director Ann Hui’s “Vietnam Trilogy”, Boat People won Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Art Direction, and New Performer at the 2nd Hong Kong Film Awards. A follow-up to 1981’s The Story of Woo Viet, the humanist melodrama is set in 1978 Vietnam, three years after the fall of Saigon. Shot in almost documentary-style, the film depicts life in a postwar Vietnam devastated by poverty and brutality, and the dangerous lengths people will go through to escape the country. Released in 1982, Boat People’s sensitive subject and uncompromising portrayal invited controversy and debate given the political world climate at the time, and the film’s distinction of being the first Hong Kong film to be shot in Mainland China with government approval.
Danang, city of south Vietnam, was being liberated in 1975. As the release of a new photo album. Akutagawa (LAM), a Japanese photojournalist, revisits Danang for shooting more pictures three years later. At that time, he meets Can Nuong (Season Ma), a girl of 14 in the streets. He follows her home and makes friends with her and her families. Akutagawa always has drinks in a bar which is run by a Mamasan (Cora Miao). Mamasan is in love with Minh (Andy Lau), who is desperate to raise money in order to leave Vietnam. Minh attempts to rob Akutagawa for his camera and he is being arrested. However, they become friends afterwards. In the end, Akutagawa determines to help Can Nuong and her younger brother to leave Vienam, Minh also decided to get on the boat with them. Enterign the sea to a different place, what will be the fates of Can Nuong and Minh?
