The acclaimed sophomore feature from up-and-coming Taiwan director Singing Chen (Bundled), God Man Dog is a quirky and compelling meditation on the role of religion in modern lives. The film features a decorated ensemble cast that includes Jack Kao (Millennium Mambo), Tarcy Su (Blue Cha Cha), teen actor Jonathan Chang from Yi Yi and A Touch of Fate: Da Yu, and Chang Han (Exit No. 6, A Brighter Summer Day), older brother of Chang Chen with the same baritone voice. Weaving three overlapping threads into one, God Man Dog tells an allegorical tale of vice, virtue, and values with unexpected touches of offbeat humor and magical realism. The second half, in particular, takes on an increasingly surreal tone underlined by Sakamoto Hiromichi's whimsical score. Wealthy and beautiful, Ching (Tarcy Su) and Hsiung (Chang Han) make for a picture-perfect metropolitan couple, but their relationship heads to the rocks after Ching loses her baby. As a last pitch to save their marriage, the estranged couple go on a trip together. Wandering minister Yellow Bull (Jack Kao) likes to collect statues of deities, all of which are on the back of his truck in a giant display case bathed in neon pink lights. Hired to perform rituals for a ghost festival ceremony, he and Hsien (Jonathan Chang), a homeless youth he takes under his wing, hit the road in their traveling temple truck. Struggling with poverty and alcoholism, aboriginal family man Biung (Ulao Ugan) turns to his local church for help, but can't find the willpower to kick the bottle. He only feels more impotent when his daughter Savi (Tu Hsiao Han), who lives in the city training for kick boxing, returns home with gifts.
