Taiwan auteur Tsai Ming Liang continues to explore love, lust, and alienation in his brilliant 2006 arthouse drama I Don't Want to Sleep Alone. Premiering at the 64th Venice Film Festival, the film won the CinemAvvenire Award, and went on to screen to much acclaim at festivals around the world. Set in Kuala Lumpur, I Don't Want to Sleep Alone is a return to roots for the Malaysia-born director, though his characteristically gritty and uncompromising portrayals of the best and worst of man resulted in run-ins with Malaysian censors. Lee Kang Sheng, who has starred in all of Tsai's films, takes on the challenge of two roles this time. He plays both a brain-dead patient cared for by young waitress Chyi (Chen Shiang Chyi from The Wayward Cloud and Goodbye, Dragon Inn) and homeless drifter Hsiao Kang who gets beaten up in the streets by a gang. Rescued by Bangladeshi migrant workers, Hsiao Kang falls into a contentious and ambiguous relationship of desire and yearning with migrant worker Rawang (Norman Atun), Chyi, and Chyi's boss (Pearly Chua).
