Francis Ng and Sandra Ng turn in acclaimed performances in Juliet in Love, a slow-burn drama from director Wilson Yip. Juliet in Love is an uncommon Hong Kong film, and possesses a compelling depth of emotion and character different from Hong Kong’s more famed thrill rides. Jordan (Francis Ng) is a low-level triad who becomes attracted to a restaurant hostess named Judy (Sandra Ng). Both have empty lives; Jordan owes a large sum of money to triad boss On (Simon Yam), while Judy lives in a state of perpetual isolation. A year earlier, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and had one breast removed. Afterwards her husband left her, and she’s retreated into her shell ever since. But Judy and Jordan are each given a chance to fill the void in their lives. When Jordan is ordered to babysit On’s son to pay off a part of his debt, he and Judy form a makeshift family with the child. Wilson Yip brings a slow, sensitive pace to this tale of two downtrodden losers who may possess the power to heal one another.
