Lou Ye’s Suzhou River recalls the dark romance and fascinating mystery of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Vertigo. Meimei (Zhou Xun) is the performer of a famed mermaid show in a local bar, who attracts the attention of the unseen narrator, and an ex-con named Mardar (Jia Hong Sheng). Both men are enthralled by Meimei, but Mardar has a dark past which continues to haunt him. Once upon a time, Mardar was in love with a pretty, innocent girl named Moudan (also played by Zhou Xun). His affection for her was pure, but his involvement in the criminal underworld would destroy any chance of love. Moudan was ripped from him, and Mardar was sent to jail.
