Won Best Supporting Actor (Qin Pei) at the 6th Hong Kong Film Awards Once a popular Shaw Brothers actor, Derek Yee (One Nite in Mongkok, 2 Young) made his directorial debut with The Lunatics in 1986. Veteran actor Stanley Fung (Winners and Sinners) takes on a strong dramatic role as Fung, a social worker who devotes himself to helping the mentally disordered. Singer-actress Deannie Ip (a Hong Kong Film Award winner for her role in My Name Ain’t Suzie) co-stars as a writer who accompanies Fung on his daily rounds and is moved by his dedication to his duty. Veteran character actor Paul Chun, who’s also Derek Yee’s half-brother, won a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actor as one of Fung’s patients. Also appearing are Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Chow Yun Fat, in two smaller, yet pivotal roles as patients that Fung encounters on his daily rounds. The film explores both the existence of the mentally disordered in Hong Kong, as well as society’s ignorance and bias towards these emotionally crippled human beings. Derek Yee presents his subject matter in a powerful and compelling manner, examining not only reality of the issues, but also how society’s harshness can push the tenuous existence of these individuals towards ultimate tragedy. Nominated for multiple Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Package Contains 1 disc Specifications | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
