Hitch a ride with The Taxi Driver, yet another long-awaited release from the Shaw Brothers film library! Although the title immediately conjures up images of Robert De Niro and a young Jodie Foster from Martin Scorsese’s 1976 American film classic, a year prior to that movie’s release came this similarly titled, yet decidedly different Hong Kong film from veteran director Pao Hsueh Li! Shaw Brothers screen legend David Chiang Da Wei (The Water Margin; Have Sword, Will Travel) headlines the film as the affable Chen Kuang, a local taxi driver whose various travels through the hustle and bustle of the city’s streets expose a Hong Kong full of charm, kindness, and even grand adventure! A year before Robert De Niro took the wheel, David Chiang Cruised the mean streets as Chen Kuang, a taxi driver whose adventures reveal Hong Kong’s verve with wit, compassion, and not a small amount of adventure (well choreographed by martial-arts great Liu Chia Yung). Variety noted, “The directing and photography show flair, and the script shows thought... The Shaw Brothers are keeping up standards with this humorous, socially aware local production”.
